Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) remains one of the most famous and influential composers.  Born in Bonn, he moved to Vienna when he was 21 to study composition with Joseph Haydn and gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist.  Many of his most admired work was composed during the last 15 years of life. For the last decade of his life he was profoundly deaf.
