Northern Lights over Chocorua Lake and Mount Chocorua, New Hampshire, USA

2016 saw an unusually high level of solar activity resulting in spectacular displays of the aurora borealis across the northern hemisphere. Known as the Northern Lights, this celestial display is formed when charged particles from the sun clash with atoms in the upper atmosphere to release energy in the form of dancing waves of green, purple and red light.  At Chocorua lake, New Hampshire, the still water brightlly reflected the most intense Northern Lights that this part of the United States had experienced in more than a decade.
